Job Alert: Seeking Diplomatic Ninja for High-Stakes French Farce

I have followed the summer of 2024 political melodrama with interest—and sometimes dismay.

I’m not talking about what’s happening in the US.

No, that one is rolling out in my native country, France!

Since the legislative elections last July, France has entered a political crisis. No party has emerged as the winner with a clear majority in the parliament.

In that context, President Emmanuel Macron, as the Head of State, had to choose a Prime Minister who could govern without fearing a no-confidence vote against their government. Such a vote, if successful, would take the government down and bring Macron back to square one.

So, the question that’s been on many people’s minds for the past couple of months is: Who will be the new Prime Minister of France?

Macron just chose and nominated Michel Barnier as Prime Minister on September 5th.

I wish him luck. No one truly knows how long his government will last before the oppositions succeed with a “motion of censure,” a parliamentary procedure that could lead to a vote of no confidence.

Time will tell.

This situation reminds me of the importance of crafting a solid job description for any role on your team. The correct description sets expectations upfront and can act as a North Star later.

So, if Michel Barnier needs a reminder of his most important duties or Emmanuel Macron has to restart the quest for another Prime Minister sooner than later, here’s a job description that can help narrow the pool of candidates!

So there you have it – the job description for France’s next political gladiator.

I sincerely hope that Michel Barnier has what it takes to juggle a fragmented parliament, dodge motions of censure, and still find time to enjoy his favorite breakfast. Admittedly, he prefers an English breakfast with fried eggs to a French croissant. Sacrilege!

          It won’t be easy.

Even his mentor, the great Charles de Gaulle, once said, “How can you govern a country with 246 varieties of cheese?”

Well, Monsieur Barnier, you’re about to find out. By the way, France has more than 1,000 different types of cheese!

          Bonne chance.
